The antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows that are found in England that documents her discoveries of treasures in. In the event that an interesting letter brings her to the little village of Bewlay hidden in the countryside far from any other, she sets off by train, with her companion to spend the day in Bewlay.
